Vans Style 112 Skate Shoes Wear Test Review

Once we caught wind that Vans was going to come out with a rubber toe cap, we absolutely had to put them to the test. We gave warehouse workers Chris Holbrook and Calvin Ngo each a pair of the new Vans Style 112 Skate Shoes and made them skate everything from transition to handrails to truly put these 112's to the test.

The Style 112 features Vans' OG vulcanized construction and Waffle outsole. The thickly padded UltraCush insole took a little bit of breaking in but absorbed impact surprisingly well for such a low-profile shoe. During the test Calvin, who prefers maximum boardfeel, decided to swap out the insole for the broken in one he had from his Rowely Solos. The rubber toe cap added durability and extra grip when doing flip tricks. However, the added grip may take a session or two to get used to. One of the most impressive features of the Style 112 was the Duracap backing hiding beneath the suede/canvas. The suede pair held up strong and after a month of skating Chris has still yet to rip a hole in the ollie area. Calvin ripped through the canvas in the ollie area very quickly but even after a month of skating, the Duracap backing has yet to rip. The waffle outsole provided excellent grip and is showing no signs of wearing down soon.

The Style 112 may take a little longer than normal to break in, but it more than makes up for it with added durability, impact protection, and grip.
