The conversation went something like this…
“Want to bring a few team guys to camp for a weekend?”
“Absolutely. What do you want us to do while we’re there?”
“Just skate and hang out with the campers. And don’t worry about food, we’ll take care of you.”
With zero obligations, how could we NOT make the two and half hour drive from Eugene to Windells, a skate and snowboard camp about 23 miles west of Mt. Hood?
The crew, which included Beau Cummins, Sean Donnelly, Justin James, Jesse Lear-Konold, downhill team rider and filmer Ross Druckrey, and skate TM Benson Ka’ai, hit the road Friday after work with plans to link up with Josh Dulac Saturday and snow TM Kyle Richner Sunday. Spirits were high.
As you pull into Windells, you can’t miss its motto, “The ‘Funnest’ Place On Earth” emblazoned across their sign. And as you drive past the cabin doors, the snake run through trees and quarterpipes literally everywhere, you quickly realize Windells’ claim as the ‘Funnest’ place really isn’t all that bold. Add a few trampolines, an indoor park, outdoor Concrete Jungle, and the raddest staff, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a ‘funner’ place on Earth.
Did we mention they have a Mini-Mega with air bag? @seandonne sent it.
The breakfast bell rings early to give campers enough time out on the hill or in the park, depending on whether they’re there to shred or shralp. Buses take ski and snowboarders to the hill while skateboarders jump in a van to skate Portland’s plethora of parks.
We stayed behind and had the entire complex to ourselves.
Other highlights include the Habitat team, including Tactics Pro Silas Baxter-Neal, making a #cascadiaNWtour stop on Saturday along with Javier Mendizabal shredding the Concrete Jungle with the Drink Water crew.
The bottom line is this: If you’re parents are looking to send you away to skate or snow camp for a week next summer, tell them you want to go to Windells. Any other place just won’t be as fun.
A huge THANK YOU goes out to Nick, Jaimie, and all the rad staff and campers for letting us hang for a couple days at what truly is The ‘Funnest’ Place on Earth.
